Our History

In March 2012, a small group of families, college students, and young adults began meeting in a living room on the northside of Indianapolis. From day one, the vision has been to “see the gospel of Jesus change everything” – starting with us, spreading to our families, our communities, our networks, and ultimately the world.

Soma Downtown began as the second church plant in a family of neighborhood churches. Soma Downtown was launched by our sister church Soma Midtown in September 2015 to the Near East neighborhoods. Two years later in September 2017, Soma Downtown helped plant a third neighborhood church in northwest Indianapolis.

In July 2020, our three Soma congregations each became our their own individual church organizations. This will help Soma Downtown continue to grow as a presence on the Near Eastside and across Downtown Indianapolis. With community partnerships like Arsenal Tech YoungLife, Like a Lion, and others, our missional communities continue to be a renewing presence in our city.

As of November 5, 2021, 445 N. State Avenue belongs to Soma Downtown Church! We are so thankful for the generosity of our Church body during this exciting season.

God has generously poured out His grace as we’ve seen lives changed, needs met, and people stirred to be a renewing presence in Indianapolis and each other’s lives. To us, that is what the Gospel Changing Everything is all about!

Our Name

The New Testament is filled with rich metaphors describing the countercultural community of people who have been transformed by grace. One of the most frequent designations for this community is the Greek word “soma”, which simply means “body.”

Soma Church seeks to embody the person of Jesus Christ to Indianapolis, displaying the riches of God’s grace to our great city in both word and deed. We desire to be family to one another as we love, serve, forgive, engage, pray, and pursue God’s glory and our subsequent joy in a deep community of faith.

Our Mission

Building the Kingdom of God, in community, for our community.

Our Networks

Although we are an independent, autonomous church, we partner with four national networks for resources, coaching, accountability, and mission. These networks are the Harbor NetworkFellowship Associates, and the Summit Network.
